Silicon in sand eating horse

A lack of silicon is one of the reasons why horses eat sand. Therefore, supplementing silicon can reduce sand eating if this is the cause.

Flexible joints & strong bones horse

Research on racehorses has shown that horses that were given silicon were less susceptible to injuries. Silicon takes time

Bones and hooves are slow growing tissue, the mineral silicon therefore needs time to work. Therefore give silicon for at least 2-3 months and for the hooves at least 4-6 months. Silicon can be given permanently, especially for older horses this is recommended.

Difference between hydrolyzed silicon and silicic acid / ortho-silicic acid
Silicon is a mineral that is only well absorbed by the body in liquid, hydrolyzed form. In powder form (such as in diatomaceous earth) or liquid silicic acid / orthosilicic acid it is already excreted before it can do its work. The hydrolyzed form of silicon is what makes this product unique. During hydrolysis, the small molecular form of silicon remains intact and active. Two water molecules are linked to one silicon molecule. Silicon is well biologically absorbable in liquid hydrolyzed form because the molecules are very small (1-3 nanometers). This is not the case with silicic acid, where the molecular particles are larger, which means it is less well absorbed.

The active, hydrolysed, liquid silicon in HELTIE horse® Silicium is 100% biologically absorbed by the animal. Our product contains no less than 15% active silicon. A bottle of one litre lasts approximately 100 days for a horse of 500kg!

Hydrolyzed silicon is not the same as ortho-silicic acid. With ortho-silicic acid, the pH value is extremely increased or decreased and it is mixed with choline or another buffer. When it is then brought back with water, the silicic acid will return to the silicon dioxide form (SiO2) which is less absorbable. This makes it more acidic (low pH value) and it contains no more than 2% active silicon.
