Slowfeeders mesh 3cm and smaller

Slowfeeders with small meshes have the most slowing effect and are extremely good to use if you want to be able to bridge long feeding breaks or if your horse eats too quickly. A slowfeeder with a mesh of 3 cm is also a good choice for horses that need to lose weight.

Some horses need some time to get used to eating from a slow feeder. You can stimulate your horse by pulling out a few tufts of hay. It is often nice to combine a small mesh with a small portion in a slightly larger mesh, e.g. 4.5 cm or 6 cm. This makes eating a bit easier and horses get used to it more easily.

Make sure that the type of roughage fits this mesh size. Too coarse roughage such as straw or too long hay can be extra difficult. Also make sure that the mesh is in proportion to the horse. A large Belgian draft horse can also have more difficulty with a mesh of 3 cm or smaller because this is extra difficult for larger lips. For small ponies and Shetland ponies, a slow feeder with a mesh of 3 cm can work very well.
