PURE® Psyllium

PURE ^® Psyllium is a gentle supplement based on psyllium husk. Over time, horses and ponies can inadvertently ingest a lot of sand, which can accumulate in the intestines. This can seriously damage the intestines and reduces the absorption of nutrients. With psyllium, you can gently remove sand from the intestines with a mild sand intake. Also nice to support the stomach lining due to the mucus-forming and moisture-binding properties of psyllium.

How can I tell if my horse has sand in its intestines?

Dissolve a few manure balls in a liter of water (preferably in a transparent plastic bag). Let the mixture settle and carefully look at the sediment at the bottom of the bag. If there is more than 1 or 2 teaspoons of sand in it, then a cure is advisable. Dissolving in a bucket is of course also possible. After settling, pour off the brown water very slowly, the sand will remain at the bottom.

Risk factors for (too) much sand absorption :

• Feeding hay on a sandy surface
• Dry pasture with very short grass (even when using a grazing muzzle)
• Mineral deficiency due to incomplete ration.

Good to know

In case of an extreme amount of sand in the intestine, which is discovered by an X-ray, for example in case of colic, this treatment is insufficient. In that case, follow the advice of the Vet.
