The As das Pferd grazing mask for your own halter helps overweight horses to lose weight or prevents overeating in the pasture. The mask is made of leather that optimally forms to the horse's head after a period of 'breaking in'. This together with the anatomical fit makes the grazing mask extra comfortable.

The grazing muzzle is made of 4 mm thick durable leather and has an 'airy' design. At the front, the grazing muzzle has extra large nostrils so that the horse can breathe easily.

This grazing muzzle is used in combination with a well-fitting (safety) halter. AS das Pferd has chosen to use plastic fittings which do not unnecessarily weigh down the grazing muzzle and make it extra safe. For horses that are adept at removing a grazing muzzle, a separate grazing muzzle such as the AS das Pferd in combination with a well-fitting halter can sometimes work better.

To protect the teeth, we always recommend using an additional insert plate. There are various insert plates available separately, which also allow you to vary the intake reduction throughout the season. By choosing a diet insert plate in the spring, you can protect your horse even more against the negative effects of high sugar levels in the grass. Later in the season, it is possible to go back to a milder intake restriction, allowing your horse to enjoy the pasture more.

Additional tips

As with any grazing muzzle, your horse will need to get used to the grazing muzzle slowly. Build up the wearing slowly and grease extra often in the beginning to make the leather supple. By building up the wearing slowly, your horse can 'break in' the muzzle and the skin gets enough time to recover, which reduces the chance of chafing.
In the event of chafing, we recommend using the merino fur pads specially designed for this grazing muzzle.
This grazing muzzle needs regular leather maintenance because of the leather material. Regular greasing keeps the muzzle water-repellent and supple and strong. It also provides more comfort. Always use a lubricant with natural ingredients because the horse wears the muzzle directly on the skin and at the mouth.

What intake restriction does the AS das Pferd grazing muzzle provide?

The normal floor openings are quite mild in restriction. It is estimated that the restriction is around 60%. The diet insert gives a tighter restriction, estimated at 75-80%. The difficulty of this grazing muzzle is the slots and the lack of an opening directly in front of the mouth. The horse really has to go looking for the grass.

Can I also use the grazing muzzle without the insert plate?

We do not recommend using an AS das Pferd grazing muzzle without an insert plate. The original base is made of sturdy and hard plastic. Without additional protection, this can lead to faster tooth wear.

The grazing muzzle is also available in a version for use on your own halter. When should I choose that?

For some horses, a loose halter in combination with a grazing muzzle works better. For some horses, a well-fitting halter or, for example, a GreenGuard halter is better. If your horse has a short nose, we recommend using the grazing muzzle with integrated halter. Otherwise, it can be difficult to adjust the grazing muzzle to the correct height.

Why do we not recommend the As as Pferd grazing muzzle for 24/7 grazing?

Whether a grazing muzzle is suitable for 24/7 grazing depends on
different properties. Among other things, the degree of restriction is a very important one.
If a horse wears the grazing muzzle permanently, it must also have all the necessary
can absorb food. Even with limited intake, a horse still has a minimum
amount of food needed to stay healthy. We also look at the material
and the potential impact on the horse's mouth when grazing 24/7. Because the As das Pferd
grazing muzzle is made of relatively hard material and also the rubber insert plates
be quite sturdy. We find the grazing muzzle less suitable for 24/7 grazing
despite the relatively mild limitation. Of course there are horses where it is good
can go. If you want to use the grazing muzzle yourself in this way
then keep a close eye on the teeth and the diet. Only use a
normal insert plate and no diet insert plate.

How long does the grazing muzzle last?

With grazing muzzles and also the AS das Pferd, the best balance between durability, comfort and safety is always considered. In addition, a grazing muzzle is a 'consumable product' due to the nature of the application and the intensive load. In general, you can assume that a grazing muzzle will last for about a pasture season. However, depending on the circumstances or the behaviour of your horse, this can be shorter or much longer.

A well-maintained grazing muzzle generally lasts longer. The insert plates are available separately and are therefore replaceable. This means that the original bottom does not wear out quickly on a pasture surface. On average, most AS grazing muzzles last between one and two pasture seasons, some even three. In the event of a breakdown, this can sometimes be shorter.

Of course, an accident can also happen. The mask has various plastic clips and press studs that serve as an extra brake-away. In addition, the leather and stitching can also give under high pressure. This is also desirable for the safety of your horse. Leather is generally easy to repair at the shoe or saddle maker.

In the pasture it is important that the chance of getting stuck is very low. An openly designed grazing muzzle gets caught more easily behind protruding objects than a more densely designed grazing muzzle. Therefore check the free living environment of your horse thoroughly.

Is there a warranty on the AS Das pferd grazing mask?

No, unfortunately there is no guarantee on the grazing muzzle. This is because the circumstances and the behaviour of the horse are decisive for the occurrence of any damage. Because we have no influence on these factors, we are also not responsible for this.
The product has been developed with great care. The properties of the material have been tailored to safety and average use that works well for most horses, within the expected period of use.

An accident can sometimes happen in a small corner and is of course very annoying. Unfortunately, a horse does not take into account this expected and desired duration of use or cost price. That is a risk with every grazing muzzle and a part of the applied measure to limit the intake of your horse.
